Chair

A Chairman is trapped in his chair, a position of authority and a physical seat, which he finds agonisingly painful. His soliloquy literally takes him inside himself to examine the emptiness left by his relationship with a demeaning father. Through his surreally transformative re‐imagining of his father and his love of music can he escape to a new way of being?

Chair is an intimate chamber piece for solo actor in a single space with minimal props using live action and animated techniques in a similar manner to Dogged.

It has been written specifically for, and was developed at Cove Park with award‐winning Scottish actor, Gary Lewis and will feature music for piano and pianola by British composer, Paul Usher.

References and inspirations include Francis Bacon, Paula Rego, the Fleischer brothers, vaudeville theatre, Aperghis’s Recitations, Schubert’s Winterreise.
